A paid translation? Fans oppose expensive new Weverse features including DMs

Fans believe that "Weverse DM" can harm artists' mental health and are proposing several changes to the new features of HYBE's platform.

Weverse is currently the most popular artist-fan communication platform among Kpop fans.

It allows fans to comment on posts from their favorite artists and participate in their live shows. Recently, Weverse added a new paid feature called “Weverse DM”. Fans can send direct messages to their idols with ease.

In reality, this new feature is not very well received by fans. They believe that it can have a negative impact on idols' mental health, as virtually anyone who pays can send messages to any idol.

People with bad intentions, or anti-fans, can take advantage of this feature to provoke, defame or offend idols and artists.

Recently, during a live broadcast, two BTS members, RM and V, spoke out about receiving strange inappropriate comments.

JungKook also disabled the commentary session when he started his live broadcast.

Fans are urging better translation quality for subtitles and prevention of negative content that can affect artists on the platform.

Previously, Bubble and Universe also had a feature that allowed paid users to send messages to artists and receive the same messages from them.

Additionally, Weverse plans to apply AI to automatically verify text messages and monitor posted content to protect artists. Which is not enough to protect idols.

While the Weverse DM is something fans are aware of, the “Membership+” has angered fans even more. Looking at the promo, it seems that more fees should be paid to access certain features.

Options such as subtitles, translations, ad-free options and access to an instant first replay were options that Internet users could previously enjoy for free, would now be paid for.

When the news was released, fans were upset. Although some found it an excuse to make jokes, notably the duration of BTS' V's Weverse Live which is probably shorter than the commercials...

According to fans, HYBE apparently wants to take advantage of them even more. While everyone would be impacted by the ads, subtitles being a paid service, was something that directly and only affected international fans.

Additionally, it would go against HYBE's ideology of music being the bridge between language barriers.

While it is normal for HYBE to want to expand the platform, removing basic features, especially subtitles, becomes an obstacle for international fans who want to enjoy K-Pop, instead putting a price on the "privilege » to take advantage of what Weverse (and before that VLIVE) had previously provided for free.

I think we're a bit leaving them behind kpop level, just good at buying albums and merch products. By doing that, they risk losing a lot of fans...

They always find a way to make more money on the backs of idols. If this continues, people will indeed find themselves in more and more difficulty and the means of communication will diminish.
