Shiba Inu, popular meme dog in Japan, dies, hundreds of fans attend memorial ceremony

In another version of the story, Kabosu the Shiba Inu may have led a life of anonymity, simply being a dog taken in by his owner Atsuko Sato in Sakura Town, Chiba Prefecture. But when a chance photo of Kabosu, sporting a comically smug look even for a Shiba Inu, began circulating on the Internet, a star was born, as Kabosu became the basis of the Doge meme. In recognition of Kabosu's worldwide fame, Sakura erected a public monument in December, followed by the installation of a Kabosu manhole cover in February.

Sadly, Kabosu has now left us, with Sato announcing the news via her Kabosu Mama Twitter account on May 24.

“This morning, Kabo-chan fell into a deep sleep. She passed away peacefully while I was petting her. To everyone who loved Kabo-chan for so long, thank you. »

Sato later gave more details about Kabosu's passing on his website *Walks with Kabosu-chan*.

“Around 7:50 a.m. on May 24, Kabo-chan fell into a deep sleep. The night before, she had eaten dinner and drank lots of water, as usual. On a beautiful morning, with soft sunlight streaming in through the window and birds singing outside, she left peacefully as I petted her. »

“To everyone who has loved Kabo-chan for so long, thank you so much. I think she was the happiest dog in the world, and I was the happiest dog owner in the world. Even now I think she smiles, wags her tail and comes close to me. I think it will always be like this. »

On May 26, a memorial ceremony for Kabosu, shown in the video below, was held at florist Flower Kaori in Narita, with more than 250 fans coming to pay their respects.
