How is the Netflix adaptation of 'Mask Girl' different from the original Webtoon?

The differences between Netflix's adaptation of Mask Girl and the original webtoon have become a hot topic of discussion.

Mask Girl is based on Naver's webtoon which captivated many viewers with its vivid exploration of the societal problem of lookism. Netflix's seven-part adaptation diverges from the original in terms of characters and overall plot.

The time frame varies between the two works. While the story of the original webtoon takes place in 2015, the adapted series takes place in 2009. As a result, Park Gi Hoon (played by Choi Daniel) uses Cyworld instead of Facebook in the series.

The relationship dynamics between Joo Oh Nam (Ahn Jae Hong) and Kim Mo Mi (Lee Han Byul) have also been drastically changed.

In the original version, Joo Oh Nam sends several maliciously edited photos of masked cam girl Mo Mi after watching her nude video at the office. But in the series adaptation, things happen differently – he only sends Mo Mi a few frames from this feed, and it's all done via email.

And then there's this brand new scene where Joo Oh Nam expresses his feelings for her. He bluntly admits: “ I've never felt this way before. »

Mo Mi's first murder is also different in the two works. In the webtoon, she takes responsibility for Handsome Monk's death by hitting him in the head with a gun. After the murder, she plays an active role in organizing the cover-up of her crime.

On the other hand, the drama adaptation portrays the Handsome Monk incident as an unintentional mistake. Although he regains consciousness later, it is Joo Oh Nam who ends up ending his life in Mo Mi's name.

The relationship between Kim Chun Ae (Han Jae Yi) and Kim Mo Mi (Nana) is also different from the original work. In the original version, Kim Mo Mi and Kim Chun Ae's faces become exactly the same after their plastic surgery.

Kim Mo Mi begins to imitate Kim Chun Ae's actions, which causes conflict between the two, and she later orchestrates Kyung Ja's involvement in her murder. However, in the Kdrama adaptation, they are close friends who cannot live without each other.

The ending is also very different from the original webtoon. In the original work, Ye Chun (Kim Min Seo), a friend, struggles alone to save Mi Mo (Shin Ye Seo) who was kidnapped. However, in the Kdrama, Mo Mi (Go Hyun Jung) and Ye Chun, along with Yeong Hee (Moon Sook), go to Kim Kyung Ja (Yum Hye Ran) to confront her.

Also, unlike the ending of the original work where Mo Mi manages to escape, Kim Kyung Ja shoots and kills Mo Mi in the adaptation. Similarly, in the original work, Kim Kyung Ja also struggles with guilt and ends up committing suicide before he can kill Mo Mi. In the Kdrama adaptation, however, a police officer shoots him shortly after he killed Mo Mi.

I haven't read the webtoon yet. But already, I appreciate the fact that in the webtoon, she takes responsibility for her first murder, it is more coherent compared to the sequel.

In short, the adaptation is softer than the webtoon… Personally I haven't read the webtoon yet but it must be super interesting with everything that is said in the article
